An approach to soft tissue in lower limb reconstruction

This talk will outline the approach to providing soft tissue cover to the lower limb using the reconstructive ladder. The lowest rung of the ladder is the simplest option - primary closure, whilst at the top of the ladder - the use complex and staged microsurgical flaps can provide solutions to the most difficult defects. The importance of a team approach and careful operative and postoperative planning is vital. Patients who undergo complex soft tissue reconstruction also require rehabilitation, oedema control and scar management. We should always strive to engage, empower and inform both patients and their carers as they progress through their treatment.
